The
grapes for the 2001 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir are from select
Russian River and West Sonoma County vineyards. Virtually all of
the Russian River fruit was grown on the Gold Ridge soil mantle.
The West Sonoma County fruit was sourced from newer producing
vineyards in the Cazadero area, located only one to two miles
from the Pacific Ocean. The wine underwent cold soaking for four
days, during which time the must was punched down by hand four
times a day, and given an extended maceration of four additional
days. After fermentation, the wine was aged in an assortment of
French oak barrels for 11 months in the caves of Rutz Cellars.
Rutz Cellars uses only French Oak barrels from four
distinguished wine coopers: Louis Latour, Francois Freres,
Claude Gillet and Seguin Moreau. The wine is racked twice, is
unfined and goes through a very light filtration at bottling.
Ruby
red in color. Aromas of strawberry and Bing cherry with hints of
cocoa powder. The flavors are rich and full, reminiscent of
spiced cherries. The finish is long, with moderate tannins, and
continues the impression of red fruit.
