The grapes
for the 2000 Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir are from select Russian River (55%)
and Sonoma Coast vineyards (45%) including Martinelli Vineyards. After
five days of cold soaking and six days of extended maceration, the wine
was fermented and aged in French oak barrels for 11 months in the caves
of Rutz Cellars. The French oak barrel program at Rutz Cellars is very
extensive and the winery utilizes 5 different coopers, including Louis
Latour, Francois Freres, Gillett, Toutant and Sequin Moreau
for entry, middle and finishing flavors.
The wine's aroma is fruit forward with hints of
Bing cherries, dark berries and dried rose petals and leather. The
flavors are full and rich with moderate tannins and spiciness and with a
very long finish.
