The Weir
vineyard is located in Mendocino County, on the south-facing slope of
the high land troughs between Anderson Valley and Alexander Valley,
three miles northwest of Yorkville. The high elevation of the vineyard
combined with the marine influence, provide the perfect microclimate for
Pinot Noir grapes – a long, cool growing season that
enhances the development of complex flavors and aromas. The
grapes from this 8 acre vineyard were harvested by hand and hand sorted
and then cold soaked for a period of four days. During this time and
through the onset of fermentation the growing cap of solids was hand
punched down at least four times per day. The lots were moved to French
oak barrels to repose in the constant humidity and temperature of the
Rutz Cellars caves. The Rutz Cellars caves are an integral part of the
winemaking equation for our Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines, providing
the optimal fermenting and aging environment as well as an actual
working space. The French Cooperage used was Louis Latour (30%),
Francois Freres (50%) and Sequin Moreau (20%).
Lush and velvety, deep and wonderfully layered in
its flavors, the 1999 Weir Pinot Noir is bursting with intense dark plum
and cherry fruit flavors and a twist of spice on the long lasting
finish.
