Located in the
southern area of the Russian River Valley, and just to the north of Rutz
Cellars’ caves. Quail Hill Vineyard is ideally situated on the eastern
face of the gently sloping, sandy loam hillside. It was planted in the
early 1970s, using a combination of Curtis Ranch and Wente clones.
Yields are small with very tiny berries, providing grapes with some of
the finest Chardonnay qualities from this appellation. Hand picked and
hand sorted, crushed and pressed, the must was cold-settled in tanks
before being transferred to French oak barrels by gravity movement. 100%
barrel-fermented sur lie, the wine underwent batonnage
and remained in oak for 11 months.
Lush and rich, the 1997 Quail Hill Chardonnay
dazzles the nose with orange-citrus, peach and mineral aromas. The entry delivers ripe fruit, which continues through a long
sustained finish. 627
