2000 Maison Grand Cru
Chardonnay - 92 points:
Crisply delineated with fine detail of flavor, this cool
Russian River Valley wine is firm and dry. The creamy
peach flavors rise over a golden wheat edge of leesy
acidity in the end, lifted and composed. Order a bottle
with halibut braised in a mushroom-infused broth. (Note: This review originally
appeared in the August 2003 issue of Wine & Spirits -
it was reprinted in the April 2004 issue as part of
the article "The Year's Best Chardonnay.") |

represented in our 2003 competition. Here are the 25 my

impressed."

| The lush,
generous cherry and plum fruit pours out like syrup for
French toast. This is big and super ripe, a dense young
wine best to enjoy now, with dark-fleshed game birds
roasted with dried fruit stuffing. |

"Rutz Cellars is famous for producing some of the best pinot
noirs in this country. Case in point: the 1999
Rutz Cellars Russian River Valley Maison Grand Cru Pinot Noir.
Made from grapes grown in select pinot noir vineyards, this
California red has everything you'd expect from a French
Burgundian pinot. It's filled with fresh fruit flavor but is
substantial enough to handle a variety of foods" |

| December, 2002 - Fred

| "The only thing more
fun than having lunch with gregarious Keith Rutz is drinking his
Russian River Valley and Sonoma Coast Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs.
He's a sort of non-traditional guy using traditional Burgundian
methods." |

| Try any of this small
winery's releases that you can get your hands on. One of our
favorites, the 1999
Maison Grand Cru Pinot Noir, is a great mouthful of wine born
of tradition and innovation. The result is a smooth, elegant wine
full of black cherry flavors with hints of clove. The finish is
long and silky. Come to think of it, this belongs on our holiday
table, too. |
